So this week I’m showing off my brand new pair of PJ pants!
This is one of projects that I made in RMIT’s Sewing Intensive short course. I signed myself up for the course to gain a bit more confidence taking measurements, working out pattern sizes, installing invisible zips and using an overlocker/serger. All very useful skills to have if you are making clothes.
This project is one of the easier patterns to start with since you don’t have to be a 100% accurate with the fitting (as you can see my pair are quite baggy – just how I like them!)
The pattern we worked off was Burda 2691 and it also includes a PJ shirt as well, which some people in the class choose to do with their extra time at the end of the week. I think the thing I found the most confusing is the pattern sizes and trying to work out what size would fit me. If you have ever purchased a clothing pattern you will know what I mean – the sizes aren’t the normal clothing sizes that you would buy from the shops. I’m still not really sure how I got to the measurements that I did but the clothes fit so I must have done a decent job. Another thing to mention is that, although it’s not essential, if you are planning on making a lot of clothing it is worth while buying yourself an overlocker/serger. It becomes a real time saver and much easier to use the zig zag stitch on a sewing machine.
The fabric I purchased was super cheap – I was able to pick up this cotton fabric from Spotlight for $2 a metre! A real bargain. You can definitely find some nice fabrics that you can pick up cheap during their sales. This fabric is called ‘Colour Pop Mono Triangle’ and the colour is ‘Royal’.
I’m already thinking of ways I might modify the pattern to make them more useful for me personally – like adding some pockets. It’s got to be one of the best things about making your own clothes, being able to adapt the pattern to suit your style and needs.
I think I did a fairly good job! I felt a bit like a kid showing off their latest A+ project when I came home and paraded around in front of Spence. Next week I’ll show you the skirt that I made!
