Keeping you warm through those cold Winter nights…
Contrary to popular belief, not all parts of Australia are warm in Winter. I know when most people imagine Australia it’s the miles of untouched beaches or the bathing beauties on the beaches of Bondi in Sydney. Well, down in Melbourne it’s quite a different story and Winter certainly has a bite to it. We may not be cold enough to get snow but at times it certainly feels like it is. And what better on a cold Winter’s night than cuddling up on the couch with a hot drink and a blanket. So after Billie (one of our cats) hurt her leg, and she spent more time indoors recuperating, I somehow lost the blanket I use in winter. To be honest I was very happy to give it up to Billie because it meant I could try out Purl Soho’s Lap Duvet!
The Lap Duvet is a free tutorial by Purl Soho. If your a regular reader you’ll probably remember my recent posts on my Wool Wrap skirt or Ear Flap Hat? Both of them are also free tutorials by Purl Soho. I just love their website – so many different sewing projects (or knitting) for bags, your home, clothing etc. There’s just something for everyone. I’m often asked by beginners where they should look for easy bag patterns and tutorials. Purl Soho is one of the places I suggest checking out the most. Their tutorials are so easy to follow and there’s always lots of pictures.
This project requires very minimal materials. Which was great because I had everything I needed in my craft room. Meaning I could get started on my Lap Duvet straight away. Now, I have to admit I purchased the top fabric so long ago that I don’t remember the name of it. The selvage didn’t offer any clues either. What I can tell you is that the top fabric is a cotton duck fabric. It’s a slightly heavier cotton fabric. The lining side is a Prima homespun cotton in Charcoal from Spotlight.
What else can I say about the Lap Duvet other than I love this project! It’s very straight forward and quite a quick make. The duvet itself is the perfect size for a lounge room blanket. The last thing you want is something that’s too big and cumbersome. All I would say is take the advice given in the tutorial and clear a space on your floor. It makes it so much easier to cut your fabric and pin your seams. And although it’s warm, I think next time I might try a double layer of wool batting. I even love the name – lap duvet – it just sounds so cozy!
