Stepping out in style…
As you all know I’m not very confident in my ability to sew clothes. So this year I made it one of my ‘sewing’ resolutions. A few months ago I figured it was about time to start working on this. So before I left on my holiday I attended a few short sewing classes offered by Thread Den.
If you live in Melbourne and are interested in learning how to sew, I definitely recommend you check them out. Thread Den is run by Danielle and a small group of teachers who are all very knowledgeable and really lovely people. I did their Sewing Basics class about 5 years ago to get some more confidence in my sewing. After that you just couldn’t drag me away from my sewing machine. It was the start of my sewing addiction! The first class I want to tell you about is the Wide Leg Pants.
This class is a great introduction to how to sew pants. You start with taking your measurements and how to work out which size you should cut out. The pattern doesn’t have any pockets so it doesn’t require a lot of pattern pieces to work with. It also has a side zip instead of a zip at the front so this helps with making it an easier project. They do teach you how to insert an invisible zipper which is a great skill to learn if you want to start sewing clothes. You also get some experience using the overlockers which is something you should think of buying if you plan to make a lot of clothes.
You do use your own fabric in these classes, so it was a great excuse for a trip down to my local Spotlight store. I decided to purchase a light denim fabric in blue so that I wouldn’t have to worry too much about pattern matching. I think in the end I made the right choice.
Overall I loved attending this class! There was plenty of help from the teacher who was able to answer all my questions. I also got some more experience installing the dreaded invisible zips! I learnt a lot more about pattern markings and how to read patterns. It was also a great learning environment because everyone there shares a common interest – sewing! And I’m really happy with how my first attempt at wide leg pants turned out! I I’m hoping I’ll be able to make another pair at home soon.
Great pants, Dee and they look like they fit really well x
