Plaid Skirt
I finally finished off my last project from RMIT’s Sewing Intensive course (I didn’t quite get it finished by the last day so I had some homework to do!) The course is designed around making two projects for the week – PJ pants and a skirt – but since we finished early we were able to start an extra project. So I decided to make another skirt, mainly because I will get more use out of it then a PJ shirt but also because I wanted to try making a skirt with a lapped zipper and a lining.

This time I made skirt C from NewLook Pattern #6843 and picked a plaid woollen fabric with a plain cotton fabric for the lining. This skirt took a bit longer to make because you have to cut out and sew two skirts. There is also a bit more hand sewing involved when attaching the lining and exterior together.

Now that I’ve made a skirt in two different ways – one with a lining and one with a band – I have to say that I prefer the method of making a band or possibly a facing instead of a lining. The main reason is the time it takes to complete the skirt. My choice of lining fabric probably wasn’t the best option. Next time I have to make a lining I’ll probably pick a silk fabric instead. I also prefer the shape of the a-line skirt over this one but that’s just my taste.

Overall I had a great time on the course. I feel like I learnt some really handy skills and I definitely have a bit more confidence in sewing clothes. I found it really inspiring to spend the week with other people who share my interests and of course it’s always great to walk away with clothes you can wear!
