It’s cold outside…
The first thing I want to talk about this week is the current situation happening all around the world with COVID-19. I know most people are needing to self isolate to help keep themselves and their loved ones safe. It’s a time when most of us are turning to our hobbies and crafts to keep ourselves occupied. I know I am! So I’ll continue to post on my blog on a regular basis and I hope it helps you during this difficult time. Please stay safe and healthy! Now, as I promised last week – this week I’m going to tell you all about Purl Soho’s Simple Felted Wool Mittens.
I actually came across this tutorial quite some time ago when I made my Felted Wool Wrist Warmers. At the time I thought they were super cute but it doesn’t really get cold enough in Melbourne. So when I booked my cruise to Antartica I knew this would be the perfect time to make some woollen mittens. Luckily I knew exactly were to look!
Firstly I want to express how much I enjoy making something from Purl Soho’s website. They have such a large range of free tutorials for both sewers and knitters. And their instructions are always very clear and with a great range of photos. This means their tutorials can be tackled by anyone, even the newbies to sewing. Plus they cater to most tastes, whether you prefer sewing clothes, bags or items for your home. If you haven’t checked out their website I really recommend you do.
Now back to my Simple Felted Wool Mittens. This tutorial was really easy to follow with no special skills or materials required. All you need is two different wool/felted wool fabrics and a sewing machine. I only had one problem and that was with the size of the pattern. The first pair of mittens I made were too small for my wrist. So I ended up enlarging the pattern by 110%. Admittedly I did use a wool fabric that had no stretch to it so that might have made a difference.
I was really happy with the end result! The grey wool matches my Wool & Cotton Ear Flap Hat, and the black just gives the mittens a bit of character. These Simple Felted Wool Mittens were perfect for keeping my hands and fingers warm whilst cruising around Antartica!
