The perfect outfit for that morning coffee
I don’t think there is anything I enjoy more in the morning than my first coffee of the day. Particularly on a lovely, clear sunny day. Well now I get to drink my morning coffee in style with my new Kimono-Style Bathrobe!
So I’m still on my quest (aka 2021 ReSEWultions) to expand my sewing skills and to make more of my own wardrobe. And where better to start than with sleepwear? It’s not only clothing we use daily but also the patterns tend to be a bit more beginner friendly. There’s also less that can go wrong with the sizing – after all no one wants skin tight pyjamas or a tight fitting bathrobe. In my book the baggier the better! So I decided to start by making myself a bathrobe.
The Kimono-Style Bathrobe is one of the many great patterns from Amy Butler’s book; In Stitches. I purchased this book about 10 years ago now, but you can still find it online. It’s probably aimed more towards intermediate sewers because there are not a lot of instructional pictures. But even if you are a beginner it’s worth buying this book. Not only are there some great projects that you will want to try out when you are more confident but it’s also very inspirational.
The pattern is quite straight forward and I didn’t come across too many problems as a beginner. I did have to re-read the instructions a few times before it all started to come together. But it’s always good practice to read through the entire pattern before starting anyway. I also think that the bathrobe could use a couple of pockets – but I do love pockets. I have some left over fabric so I’m going to add one or two pockets to this bathrobe.
The thing I love the most about my new Kimono-Style bathrobe is the fabric! Instead of buying fabric for this project I decided to reuse and repurpose an old quilt cover. Not only do I get to re-use the quality fabric, which is very environmentally friendly, but I also save money in the process. Plus I get to wear a patterned fabric which I still love. I’m also planning on making a set of PJ’s to match because I still have about 2-3 meters of quilt fabric left. There are just so many benefits to reusing, repurposing and recycling in the crafting world.
Other than a lack of pockets (lol) the Kimono-Style Bathrobe is a great pattern. I really love the style and how roomy and comfy it is. Once the pattern pieces are cut out the bathrobe comes together quite quickly. Now that I’ve completed this project I can’t wait to make my next project from this book.
