Unique gift idea for the home
As many of you know, recently Spence and I went on a trip to Europe to visit family and friends. Some of them were lovely enough to put us up in their homes for a short period of time. So in preparation for the trip I started to brainstorm some gift ideas. Something that we could bring them to show our appreciation. The presents would also need to be light and small so we could take them with us in our suitcase. I thought something for their homes might be welcomed since most of our family had recently moved. I also wanted to make the gifts unique and personal so something handmade would be ideal. That’s when I came up with the idea for making fabric coasters. Perfect!
There are probably heaps of tutorials out there for making handmade fabric coasters but to be honest I didn’t look. Instead I decided to design my own Pedlar Creative Fabric Coasters! I thought it wouldn’t take me too long but the perfectionist in me had to try out multiple designs before I settled on the final version.
The construction of these coasters wasn’t too difficult and they require minimal supplies. I used three different types of interfacing for my coasters but probably the most important of those is the insul fleece. It’s a fleece that is contains an aluminised scrim binder that helps to reflect heat or cold back to its source. Very useful for fabric coasters. It’s also the same interfacing I used when I made my coffee cup sleeves. It’s called Insul Bright and I purchased it from Spotlight. But Pellon also has a version. To add a bit of extra stability as well as texture, I’ve also done some quilting on the top side of the coasters.
Overall I was very happy with the finished result! Not only are they stylish but also very useful around the home. I’m certainly going to be putting together a tutorial for you all on my site. You’ll be making your own in no time. And they made great presents for our overseas family and friends!
