Gifts for the home
I’m currently playing catch up on my posts. So the next few will be all about the Christmas gifts I made for family and friends. As my regular readers already know – I really love making and giving handmade gifts. This one is all about the Classic Mitered Corner Dishtowel – a gift for the home.
There are heaps of tutorials available online for making dishtowels. The Classic Mitered Corner Dishtowel is a free tutorial by Purl Soho. If you haven’t come across Purl Soho before I can highly recommend checking out their site. It’s my go-to place for sewing projects around the home. They have a whole range of free tutorials to try – including several for making dishtowels.
The Classic Mitered Corner Dishtowels aren’t overly complicated to make. So it’s a great project for even the newest sewers. Don’t know what a mitered corner is? This tutorial includes a video explaining how to make a mitered corner. A very handy skill to know – particularly if you want to make quilts. You can also find information on how to sew mitered corners in my Hanky tutorial.
The fabric I used for my dishtowels was a range of linen and linen-cotton blends. I chose these fabrics because I had read that linen is good for making dishtowels. But I haven’t had a lot of experience sewing with Linen. So I was surprised at how easy it is to accidentally stretch out of shape. Particularly when ironing.
All in all I was pretty happy with the end result! I also really enjoyed making them. Sometimes its nice and therapeutic to make a simple project. And I learnt a lot more about working with Linen/Cotton fabrics. Plus they seemed to be a hit at Christmas!
